Presentation of the research institute

The research unit CRISES brings together several disciplines: ancient languages and literature, archeology, art, art history, French and comparative literature, philosophy, and psychoanalysis. This multidisciplinarity, while fostering collaborations among different areas of research, calls for a true interdisciplinary endeavor, representing the epistemological specificity of CRISES.  All these disciplines, whatever the period or domain considered, coalesce in the long-term analysis, from Antiquity to present, with the goal of finding and studying the rhythms between continuity and ruptures, reversals, permanencies and mutations, as found in  works and knowledge, individual and collective worlds, social and cultural spaces. The acronym expresses the particular scientific interest of the team, within this scope, for all that concerns the disturbances, instabilities, that is, the crises. It is also the symbol of the critical stance of the researcher in the humanities and social sciences, who is conscient of the dangers involved in the evolving nature of knowledge and takes this instability as conducive to the exploration of new paths.

Research is centered around four major themes :

Societas Beliefs, collective representations and social bonds.

Imperium  : The making of territories.

Quid Novi?  : Changes and evolutions of forms and knowledge.

Natura

It is not only a matter of seeking, through the evolutions of culture in the broad sense of the term, to determine the significance of these rhythms for the cultural, political, religious, economical actors, but also to develop operative concepts for the future.
